Back in Aussieland...

Dear all,

After a gruelling 29 hour trip, I made it back home in one piece. Everything is precisely where I left it, the town hasn't changed a particle...

But there's a great stillness, an emptiness, a void which only Karin and Ingrid can fill. While I'm glad to see my home, mother and friends again, I can't wait to get back to Europe.

Having said that, it is comforting being home in other ways.

I missed the fabulous food - glorious steaks, exotic 'Pacific Rim' cuisine complimented with wine to suit every palate, not to mention one litre bottles of gin for only $24.00 and bottles of beer at $1.50 apiece.

Only in Australia... last night, breaking news on the TV is a car crash on a local highway and the evening news concluded with a list of the cheapest petrol prices in the local area.

Being a new country is part of what makes Australia great. But the only reason it is a new country is that it took so damned long to find. The blessed isolation is superb, the only down side being that we Aussies don't feel engaged in the wider world in the way Europeans or Americans do. In your congested, centrally located homelands you're at the heart of something whereas Aussies are a million heartbeats away from the rest of the Western world and its concerns.

That's why commercial TV stations will lead the nightly news with 'Crash on Bourke Highway, one dead', while Baghdad burns and the rest of the world goes to hell in a wheelbarrow.

In other words, it's a great place to unwind! :)

However, on last nights news I heard that the Catholic orientated "World Youth Day" (coincidentally, the large event in Germany which Michal has been writing and researching articles recently), will be held in Australia in 2007. That should prove to be interesting, since such large non-sporting events usually bipass Australia completely. What have you heard relating that Michal mate?

Will write more soon mates, I need to go now. Lacking an internet connection I find myself sitting in the 'Cowra Municipal Library' using a borrowed computer and my time is set to expire.

Cheers all...
